About Us
The Research and Education Coalition for Ocean Sciences (RECOS) is a consortium of U.S academic institutions, nonprofits, and aquaria advocating for ocean science, technology, infrastructure, and education.
Why RECOS formed
The US ocean science research communities face urgent challenges, including decommissioning of critical ocean observational infrastructure, an aging and shrinking US academic research fleet, rising maintenance/operations costs, and inadequate support for ocean research, technology development, and education. These challenges are emerging at a time of uncertainty, when ocean access and data, particularly in strategic areas, are more crucial than ever for the U.S economic prosperity, public health, food security, and national defense. There is an urgent need to unite with a unified voice and advocate for federal investment in programs and research supporting ocean observing, infrastructure, the ocean-climate nexus, and research into coastal and ocean processes, modeling, forecasting, and synthesis.
Areas of Focus
Members of RECOS leverage their collective expertise in science, technology, education, and policy to provide objective input into matters surrounding critical challenges and opportunities facing the world’s oceans. See more information below.
Membership
We invite institutions and organizations to consider joining RECOS and supporting our work advocating for ocean priorities. Our work and message can be shaped by the priorities, concerns and needs of different organizations and diverse perspectives. Please consider joining us:
